How to use Ask

Describe your situation

Plain words work best — “can my landlord put me out?”, “road tax”, “divorce”. Misspellings are fine.

What I can find

The Act that covers a topic, the exact sections inside the 537 law texts, a law’s status (in force, repealed), and sittings of Parliament — ask “debates in April 1980” or “when was X mentioned in parliament” and I’ll hand you to the Hansard search.

Speak instead of typing

Tap the microphone beside the box, allow the microphone when your browser asks, and say your question. Your browser turns your speech into words (in Chrome and Edge this is done by the browser maker’s speech service); this site does not record or keep your voice. If your browser cannot listen from the page, tapping the microphone opens the keyboard instead: use the microphone key on your iPhone, iPad or Android keyboard to dictate, then tap Ask.

What I don’t do

I don’t interpret the law or give legal advice — for that, speak to an attorney-at-law or the Community Legal Services Commission.
